Small Indulgences

Stressed-out consumers want to indulge in affordable luxuries and seek ways to reward themselves.

I first heard the phrase “small indulgences” in the 80’s when futurist Faith Popcorn (https://faithpopcorn.com) was the keynote at a conference. She talked about the value and importance of allowing us to reward ourselves in small ways that feel good.

Linda doesn’t get special haircuts or spend a lot on fancy clothes, but the monthly manicures are a must. Lee splurges on a certain organic orange juice as a way to specially start the day. I spend lunch hours reading mystery novels that allow me to disconnect for a bit.

I can’t help but wonder how we return to the office when working from home was filled with small indulgences. Many are now quite favored and we struggle to give them up to return to the office. Having lunch with a spouse; a quick walk around the block with the dog; making a special tea in the kitchen, writing blogs on the deck with feet up.

With all the stressors around us right now, some affecting us directly, others indirectly, taking the minute to snack on some chocolate, watch the birds on the feeder or pet the cat are very much needed for our wellbeing. And it’s possible to find those small indulgences in the office as well. Possible and important.

Take a minute to think of how you enjoy small indulgences. I’d love to hear what they are.
